The fastest and most hassle-free way of travelling from the airport to Sydney central is by taking the airport link on the metro. Those who are visiting Sydney for the first time may not know about the additional Sydney Airport Station Access Fee (AUD$14.30 for Adult, AUD$12.80 for Gold Senior/Pensioner, Concession and Child/Youth) when you take the Sydney train from International Airport and Domestic Airport stations. This will be deducted from your Opal card in addition to your regular fare when you travel to and fro from Sydney Domestic and Sydney International Airport train stations.
Most Sydney citizens do not take the airport link, it is basically a tourist trap.
I don’t know about you, but I think it is absurd that I should be charged an extra sum of money just because I am a tourist.
I decided to find an alternative route that will allow me to bypass the International Airport and Domestic Airport stations. Let me show you a tip on how to spend just AUD$5.20 on single-trip journey from Sydney airport to city central. It’s not so much about the money, but the satisfaction of bypassing a tourist trap. If you don’t have too much luggage and you have enough time, it is worth a try.
The easiest way to go from the airport to city central is to take the Airport & South Line (green line). Those who arrive by Domestic Airport can go to Mascot station while those from International Airport can go to Wolli Creek station.
Since I arrived at the International Airport, I will walk over to Wolli Creek station which should take around 30 minutes.
After exiting the International Airport, head to the left and look out for the “Carpark North & South” sign.
Follow the sign for “Express Pick-up”.
You should see a sign that points you to Marsh Street, follow that sign.
There was some construction going on when I was there, so I had to cross a pedestrian bridge.
From the pedestrian bridge, you can see the Airport Drive bridge that we will be crossing shortly.
At the end of Airport Drive bridge, you should see this sign that reads “Way To International Terminal”, pointing to the way you came from. When you see this sign, you know you are on the right track.
At the end of the bridge, you should be able to make out Mercury Hotel in the distance.
Cross the road and walk through Cahill Park. This is the perfect to stop for some lunch or dinner, overlooking the beautiful Cooks River.
After exiting Cahill Park, continue walking along the street.
When you spot a Woolworths supermarket, you have arrived at Discovery Point Place. Discovery Point Place is a charming riverside residential estate complete with supermarkets, restaurants and amenities. Stock up on water and food at the supermarkets.
Walk through Discovery Point Place and you will reach Wolli Creek station. A single trip ticket from Wolli Creek to Museum station cost me just AUD$5.20, it’s even cheaper if you use Opal card (around AUD$2.70).
I hope this tip can help some of you save some money. Please leave a comment and share this post if you think it is helpful. ”
