Besides surfing, Gold Coast is also known for its seafood. I don’t like going to seafood restaurants as they charge exorbitant prices. Instead, I enjoy visiting markets like Sydney Fish Market and Tsukiji Market where I can get the freshest seafoods at reasonable prices. I googled “gold coast fish market” and one of the more interesting search result was Gold Coast Fishermen’s Co-Operative.
Gold Coast Fishermen’s Co-Operative is unlike any other fish market I have ever seen, in fact it’s not even a fish market. There are no stalls, there are only fishing boats docked at a jetties.
The fishermen leave every night and fish through out the night, returning the next morning with the freshest seafood that are sold directly from the fishing boats.
Fishermen write on blackboards at the entrance of the respective jetties what they are selling for the day. You buy the seafood directly from the fishermen on the fishing boats. It doesn’t get anymore authentic than this.
Some boats sell cooked seafood while some boats only sell uncooked seafood, make sure you find out before buying.
We bought 6 crayfish, 2 spanner crabs, 6 huge prawns and half a kilogram of medium prawns, all for AUD$75.
The huge prawns are each as big as my hand, this is the first time I have seen such huge prawns!
If you are looking for a place to eat the seafood like we did, walk to the left after exiting Gold Coast Fishermen’s Co-Operative. Walk for around 10 minutes and you should see Peter’s Fish Market which sells freshly-cooked fish & chips. There are a few wooden tables and benches nearby.
Gold Coast Fishermen’s Co-Operativee is such an underrated hidden gem for those of us who want fresh seafood straight from the source.
